10 Months of Walking

Buenas tardes familia,Esta semana fue bien suave! We found and taught a ton of new people this week. We walked just about everywhere like a hundred times but it was definitely worth it. We met a ton of less active families this week as well because we finally just got their information sheets from the zone leaders so that was super nice too.

Alright so I've got a story for you guys as well. So we've been teaching this older investigator family and maaaan I've never had such a hard time teaching the gospel to anyone. We taught them about the Restoration and the Priesthood and why it's important to have the right authority for baptism. They've already been to church plenty of times and have told us that they believe in Joseph Smith and that he was a prophet. So we start explaining it like we always do and one of the investigators just stops us where we're at in the middle of the discussion and says, 'oh hey my car that's out front right there was blessed by someone with that power because the previous owner was a Christian and it never breaks down.' I just looked over at my comp and thought, 'what in the heck????' But anyways we keep going and teaching them as simply as we possibly could to the point where they're starting to understand what we're saying. So we ask them some questions about the Priesthood and they seem like they've got it. So I ask them, 'why is baptism important?' And they give us the right answer back at us. So then I ask them, 'why is it important that we get baptized by someone with the right authority?' Again, they give us the right answer back. Perfect, I thought, we've got them right where we want them for a baptismal invitation. So I ask them, 'will you be baptized by someone who holds this Priesthood authority?' and then they respond by saying, 'no it's just that we've already been baptized before in another church.' And wheeeew my patience just flew right out of the window. We tried teaching them like three times but they could just not understand that whole concept. It was just super frustrating. They even went on to talk about a six year old boy that they knew who spoke about the Bible really well so they thought he was a prophet as well.......yeah no words for that. Some people just aren't blessed with intelligence or have a hard time learning but I guess my role as a missionary is to teach them in a way that they can understand, even if that means teaching primary lessons. We'll be teaching them again this week so I'll let you know what happens next visit haha.

Umm lets see...well it's actually been surprisingly cool this week weather-wise. My comp and I and getting along really well and we've been finding a lot of work as of late. I wish I could have been there for Mom's birthday and everything but I guess there will be a day for that in the future. Everything else has been going well for me and I hope you guys are all doing great! Love you all.
Con amor,
Elder Thayne

Buenas tardes,
WHEW man it has been a really long, exhausting week! My new comp, Elder Monsen got here last Monday so our goals for this week were for him to get to know the whole area and meet everyone, so that meant lots and lots of walking. We found like eight new investigators this week and met just about every single less-active member in our area (most of which I didn't even know existed, because there's just so many of them haha). Either way, it felt good to get back into the way of things and I feel like everything with my new comp is going well. He's kind of a goofy guy but he's super funny and he has a lot of experience on the mission so I've already learned quite a bit from him.

So kind of a funny story my comp and I were looking for a reference that the other missionaries here gave us, a dude named 'Jesus.' So this reference didn't have an exact address on it, just the name of the neighborhood and the color of car, so the only option we had really was to ask people if they knew a Jesus that lived in their area. So we walk up to these two older guys that are sitting out in front of their house or something and we just ask them, 'hey we're looking for a guy named Jesus that lives around here, do you guys know where he lives?' And he just responds, 'yeah, I know him, he lives up there' (fingers pointed in the sky towards heaven). And then we just realized how ironic it was that we were two missionaries looking for Jesus and asking people if they knew where he lived. Idk we just looked at each other and laughed it off so hard haha. I know that was kinda stupid but to the two of us it was really funny.

Let's see, it's warming up A LOT here and that means tons and tons of sweating and it makes it even worse when people don't open their doors or when they aren't home. I can't wait to be home and just be able to sit inside all day in the nice AC haha. It's crazy to think that I've already been out for ten months, before you know it I'll be at a year and then I'll be counting down!

Pues, gracias por todo. Les amo mucho y espero que tengan buena semana!
Con amor, Elder Thayne

Buenas tardes familia,

Well this week was another one for the books! On Saturday my comp and I had the opportunity to baptize one of our investigators, Swamy! My comp baptized her and then I confirmed her yesterday in sacrament meeting. It was a great experience being able to bring her unto Christ and I think baptism weekends in general are the best times of the mission (apart from P-days ha). Anyways, they threw a fiesta celebration later that night on Saturday and got to enjoy some super good Sonoran hot dogs and even got to watch the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight at their place!

Let's see what else happened this week...well today as a zone we set up a ping-pong table in the church and bought some water balloons and just had tons of different activities and whatnot and it was really fun. We played some basketball outside too but it's REALLY hot here right now so that didn't last too long haha. We also all bought t-shirts as well that say 'Zona Guaymas' on them so we can remember our time here.

In about an hour we're going to be hiking one of the big 'hills' there are here with our converts and their mom and apparently there's one heck of a view from up top. It takes about two hours each way up and down but we're hoping to get a good view of the sunset and area. I didn't bring my camera but I'll be coming back to the cyber around 8pm to send you guys photos of the baptism and everything else I did this week.
Also Mom the package you gave to Sister Francis just got here today and thank you for the goodies!

I'll be skyping you guys on Sunday so I'll call you guys sometime this week via cell phone to let you know at what time we'll be able to do it that day!
Alright thanks for everything! Love you guys, have a great week!
Con amor, Elder Thayne
